Trends-Push Button Start

Safety is key with a keyless ignition.

Many new vehicles have smart keys that allow drivers to start their cars with the push of a button. While convenient, push button start can pose a risk to drivers and their loved ones.

With the key still in their pocket, drivers can exit the car with the engine still running. Modern engines are often so quiet that some drivers pull into the garage, forget to shut off the car and enter the house while carbon monoxide gas builds up.

With no smell, color or taste, carbon monoxide can travel through a home’s vents or underneath the doors and poison both people and pets.

Thankfully, some vehicles issue audible warnings when you’re not in the car and the engine is running. But the degree of these warnings vary, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is pushing automakers to create a standardized warning system.

If your car is powered by push button start, be extra careful – especially if you park in a garage.
